Brief Overview: Service Learning Club was designed and implemented to give students the opportunity to give back to their community. A major project that we work on each year is our “Military Pride” initiative. Learning about the men and women that protect our rights and freedoms is powerful, but supporting them with cards and appreciation is truly an honor. As a group each year we decide what other kind of community projects we would like to implement. All of the events and projects we get involved with help us to further develop our teamwork, citizenship, creativity, public relations and speaking skills. Meeting dates and times are also decided as a group to try and meet the needs of all that are interested in participating. Typically, we do not meet weekly; our events and projects will dictate how often we need to meet. With all of the other clubs being offered at Canal View, it is hard to find a day that works for everyone. This club does involve a commitment and the projects and events we decide to take on will require work. Appropriate behavior is required and members must be willing to represent Canal View in a positive way.

A Few Examples of Prior Service Learning Service Projects:

  • Military Pride - “Hall of Honor” (located outside the cafeteria)
  • Veteran’s Day – Visit Veterans at Hickory Hollow ( songs and craft)
  • Valentine’s for Veterans and Our Flag Day Celebrations (public speaking)
  • Care Packages/Cards to Veterans (work on during meeting)
  • Monthly Visits to Wedgewood Nursing Home – (crafts and games with residents)
  • Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign – (ring bells and designated location)
  • “Fundraiser for Madison” ( fundraiser and collection and counting of funds donated)
  • “Operation Welcome Home” (collected items for 700 Marines returning from Afghansitan
  • Canal View End of the Year Family Picnic – (carnival games)

Other projects can be determined by members interest and opportunities available locally. Any community service ideas are always welcome.
